Einen Berliner der Freude

I had forgotten the experience of having an IM client (or 6 actually) logged in all the time. People send you strange random IMs. I used to get so many when I was using ICQ a lot in 2001, but most of those were actually interesting people who I ultimately kept track of. Now it's just random Omegle-type conversations:

Session Start (floyd_mephit:bulboussalmon): Tue Sep 01 22:23:34 2009 -0400
[22:23] bulboussalmon: Once upon a time there was a guy who was the kind of guy who did things like specifically he once ate a round thing made of dough not a donut a different thing a muffin and it tasted good and he shouted something that expressed happiness.

[09:51] F Mephit: and they lived happily ever after
Session Close (bulboussalmon): Wed Sep 02 09:53:07 2009 -0400

Session Start (floyd_mephit:bulboussalmon): Wed Sep 02 23:20:16 2009 -0400
[23:20] bulboussalmon: what?

[09:13] F Mephit: that's what I was going to say to you actually
Session Close (bulboussalmon): Thu Sep 03 09:14:11 2009 -0400

Session Start (floyd_mephit:bulboussalmon): Thu Sep 03 23:16:24 2009 -0400
[23:16] bulboussalmon: (away) classes = danglesesh
[00:08] bulboussalmon: excuse me?

[09:54] F Mephit: You IMed me with: "Once upon a time there was a guy who was the kind of guy who did things like specifically he once ate a round thing made of dough not a donut a different thing a muffin and it tasted good and he shouted something that expressed happiness." I finished the story for you.

[09:54] F Mephit: Or maybe you don't think they should live happily ever after. Maybe you think that after he expressed happiness, he came to a realization that this moment, this ecstatic shudder which he released through himself as if it were truly him that released it, polarized him as a waveguide and he knew then that he would never experience happiness again, in any form. The gasp was a last gasp, leaving a husk behind it as what could only be described as joy left him towards the sky, up and out, to fuse with the clouds and one day bring rain.
