Swab the deck

I recently got a free kit from the National Marrow Donor Program to collect DNA and type me for some markers so I can be added to the registry. If I match I can go in to have either blood taken or bone marrow taken from my hip-bone for someone with a need for marrow (and who doesn't like marrow?). The marrow collection is supposed to be pretty much painless since they anesthetize you beforehand. They were a little unclear whether it would be an epidural or what, but they mentioned an option for general anesthesia, which is what I would insist on. I don't cotton to the idea of an epidural particularly well.

You can get on the registry for free right now, as they're running a promotional campaign, so I suggest you swab while the swabbin's good.

I'm pretty sure they don't give you any sort of printouts, and they don't actually sequence your genome (there are services which do, but only for many thousands of bucks), but maybe if you mailed them they might send something as far as tissue-type marker info, although using it for ancestry is probably not so useful. If you want to do the ancestry thing, your best bet is to just stick to their kit.
